Car Lockout Service

The trunk is full of groceries, the cart is back in its corral, and the keys are sitting in the cup holder in plain view. Every door handle lifts and stops.

In plain words

Winter makes its own lockouts. Slush runs into a door cylinder by day and freezes solid by night; a door bonds to its rubber seal in a cold snap; a fob battery gives up on the first minus-twenty morning; and a weak car battery leaves the remote with nothing to talk to. A cold-weather lockout visit treats the car gently: de-icer and warmth instead of force on a frozen cylinder, a careful release of a door stuck to its seal, a fresh coin battery in the fob, and a jump for the car if needed, then silicone on the seals so the next freeze passes quietly.

The call
You dropped the duffel bag in the trunk, closed the lid with your elbow, and heard the keys land inside a heartbeat too late. The cabin is locked as well, and the only way into that trunk seems to be a key you can see nowhere.

How the visit goes

Steel door lever on an oval plate with a key in the lock, beside a row of metal bolts on the edge.
  1. Scene 1

    Where the car is sitting

A car in a driveway, a lit parking lot, an underground garage or on the shoulder of a four-hundred-series highway each ask for a different approach. On a highway the locksmith parks to shield the work, keeps hazard lights on and works from the side away from traffic, the same routine the provincial driver's handbook gives stranded drivers. In a tight garage the question is clearance to open the door and light to see inside the cabin. In a private lot or a building with gated access, someone may need to let the van in. Telling the locksmith exactly where the car is, and how to reach it, saves the first ten minutes on site.

  2. Scene 2

    Working the door cylinder

Where the car keeps a keyed driver's-door cylinder, exposed or under a small cap that pops off with a fingernail or a plastic pry, the locksmith can open the lock without going through the gap at all. A two-in-one pick and decoder built for that keyway sets each wafer to its shear line under light turning pressure, and the cylinder rotates and unlocks the door. As it does, the tool reads the depths of the wafers it can reach; a door cylinder sometimes exposes only part of the cut pattern, so the reading is completed against the vehicle's key code or another lock where needed. The cylinder is left clean and lubricated with whatever product the vehicle maker specifies.

  3. Scene 3

    Ready for the next freeze

After a winter lockout the car is set up to take the next cold snap in stride. The door cylinder has been dried and given whatever lubricant the vehicle maker specifies for cold weather, and the door seals have been wiped and treated with silicone so they release instead of bonding to the frame. A small tube of lock de-icer for a coat pocket, never left in the locked car, covers the mornings a keyway ices over. Parking nose-out of the wind where you can, keeping the driver's door seal clean of slush, and swapping the fob battery each autumn are the small habits that carry a car through to spring.

In the van

  • Fob coin batteries
  • Transponder key blanks
  • Key cutting machine
  • Door-edge guards
  • Silicone spray for door seals

What shapes the quoteMarkland Woods Locksmith Co.

Number of keys made
One replacement gets you home; a second cut and programmed at the same time saves a future call. Each key is counted into the quote individually, so say how many you want.
Where the car is parked
A driveway is simple. A highway shoulder needs a shielding position and extra care, a gated lot needs access arranged, and a tight underground garage adds time for light and clearance.
Weather on the day
A cylinder frozen solid or a door frozen shut against its seal takes patient thawing before any opening can begin, so a call during a deep cold snap is quoted with that time in mind.

Frequently asked questions

My car is in a gated lot or an underground garage. Does that matter?

Only for getting the van to the car. Tell the locksmith how the lot is entered, whether a code, a buzzer or an attendant is involved, and which level the car is on, so nobody loses time at the gate. In a tight garage the locksmith checks there is room to open the door fully and enough light to see the interior switches, and brings a torch if not. The opening itself is unchanged.

My wallet, permit and everything else are locked inside. What then?

That is the ordinary case, and there is a routine for it. Tell the locksmith on the phone so the plan is agreed in advance. Often the plate can be matched to a photo of the permit on your phone, a family member can bring identification, or a fleet manager can confirm a company vehicle. Otherwise the door is opened and the documents in the glovebox are checked against your identification before the locksmith leaves.

Will opening the car damage the paint, the door or the seal?

A professional opening leaves nothing behind. Door-edge guards sit between tools and paint, the air wedge is inflated in small steps so the frame flexes evenly and returns to shape, and the reach tool is padded. Where the car has a door cylinder, a matched pick-and-decoder turns it exactly as a key would. Any mark already present is pointed out before work begins, and the door, glass and seal are checked over at the end.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 38 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 38% of homes in Mississauga were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Where housing is mixed, doors that have been replaced sit beside doors that never were. A new door in an old frame, or an old door in a repaired frame, needs its strike and hinges checked together so the whole assembly works as one.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 37% of homes in Mississauga (2021 Census).Townhouse rows often share a keyway chosen by the builder. A locksmith can move a household onto a keyway of its own so a neighbour's key, or a key from the construction phase, no longer has any chance of fitting.
